  1. As a Certified Professional Organizer, Senior Move Manager, and member of ICD, hoarding is not a “ha ha” situation. It is sad that for TV ratings they are willing to make fun of a person with a very serious issue. Maybe next they will make fun of people who are depressed or bi-polar?
I work with many seniors who hoard. Those who I have worked with are very nice people with a terrible problem. Many want help and are open to recieving help. It is a very brave step when someone who hoards asks for help.
The Institute for Challenging Disorganization (ICD) is a great resource to find out more about hoarding and how to receive help.

  2. Thanks for bringing up this episode, and you are right, in my opinion. I see this problem with almost every Depression-era kid, who in their adult years, are keepers of everything and are facing hardships because of it. It would have been nice, at least, if CBS and/or the show’s producers would have given a PSA at the end about the seriousness of the problem and who to contact for more information. CC

  3. Carol,
Your PSA idea is great! Why wouldn’t CBS take 30 seconds to do it? Because they can sell those 30 prime-time seconds, I guess. Frustrating!

  4. Great article, Mary Kay. I didn’t get a chance to see the show, but I’ve heard about it. Being a Senior Move Manager and a Professional Organizer and member of NASMM, NAPO and ICD, it saddens me that CBS would find it appropriate to make light of such a serious subject. There are many true professionals out here that care deeply and work hard to earn the trust of our clients and prospective clients — so we can help. Possibly the only good that can come out of this is good, informative conversations like this. Thanks for your excellent blog post.

  5. I appreciate our NASMM’s staff sharing this show. Many people I know can not watch the hoarding shows on TLC and A&E. Do we laugh at people with other mental illnesses? What does it say about who we are and are attitudes towards others?
